An outing to Metis along the Gaspe Peninsula

We went to Metis today, a wonderful beachside town, less than an hours drive from Bic, for a rummage sale fundraiser for the local Heritage Center. The best part of the rummage sale for my partner and I was the books - perhaps a thousand to choose from, all without an asking price. You simply paid what you could, or whatever you wanted to contribute. We picked out half-a-dozen books with gardening or natural history themes. The whole experience had a nice feel.
We also stopped by a pleasant cafe in Metis, a community gathering spot, with gift store, good coffee, food, and a nice selection of used books for borrowing (no need to sign out, just take and return, all on the honor system).
Also in Metis, just up from the cafe, is a parking area with public beach access. It's a great beach to explore with sand and rock outcrops (depending on the tide), and beach combing opportunities, which for us is looking for drift wood and interesting small stones smoothed over by time and the erosional effects of the river.

Our last stop was Metis Gardens, a first rate public botanical garden, and must see destination if you have any interest in plants, and are visiting the Gaspe Peninsula. It's close to peak flowering so there were lots of beautiful plants to see, some native to the region, others not, along with many colorful ornamentals.
