First time cross country skiing in Bic National Park

Before this winter, it had been 30 years since Lisa and I had cross-country skied. In anticipation of our winter trip to Gaspe this January, we bought Altai backcountry skis. Shorter and wider than Nordic skis, they are highly maneuverable, and unlike snow shoes, provide a nice glide. We had great fun trying them out in Asheville after a December snow storm and today, we had our first opportunity to test them in Bic National Park, just up the road from our house in Bic. The morning was unusually warm for these parts - about 28 F with a cloudy sky and steady wind. Skiing on freshly fallen snow, we traversed the Le Portage trail for a couple of hours. It was a great day to be out in the woods.

Lisa at the trail head. We did not see any other skiers,
wide-tire cyclists, hikers, or snowshoers today.

We cycled this same trail last summer when the adjoining meadow
was green and lush.

Along the Le Portage trail.

Along the trail we came across this warming hut which had a wood stove
table, and tea kettle.

There weren't any picnickers today at this site along the trail.
